Today I want to share with you some goodness! I don’t know if you feel like I do when you look back over the last year and consider your time on the internet, but I recognize that I spent MANY mind numbing, time wasting, black hole-ish hours completely zoned out. I took much more time to stare at a screen at other people’s problems, kids, adventures, random thoughts, and seemingly perfect lives; instead of looking into my own wonderfully messy life and the eyeballs of my favorite humans. I am guessing that this year my eyes were witnessed less by people, and a lot more by a screen than any other year. This is something I want to change in this coming year.
Hey wait! Don’t feel guilty and shut down the computer quite yet! Stay with me for a bit. I do want to say that in the midst of those long lost hours in a far off land I did come across some amazing and great content that has really impacted me! Tonight I want to shine a little light my internet usage this last year and share some of my favorite things that others posted that have really stuck with me. Here are The Top 5 Game Changing Shares of 2015.
1- The Power of Vulnerability, Brené Brown, TED
Before last year I had never heard of 2 really great things: TED talks and Brené Brown. This is a great intro to both! If you have been listening out there in the world, you may have heard the words wholehearted, authentic, shame and vulnerability a lot more in your conversations than ever before. This is because of the work of Brené Brown. These concepts have been a game changer for me. It has helped me feel closer to humanity in my trials, knowing that we suffer in much the same way. I hope you enjoy this!
2- The Hero’s Journey, Todd Mack and Joseph Darowski, The Protagonist Podcast
So my cousin Todd Mack is one of the coolest nerds on earth! He and his long time buddy Joseph Darowski started this podcast last year where they discuss great characters in literature. You can read more about how smart and cool they are here. I love this podcast! In this particular episode they discuss what is commonly known as the Hero’s Journey. It has changed how I look at every book and movie that I have consumed since. It has also helped me identify that I am on my own epic journey! We all are! Dig in!
3- Your Elusive Creative Genius, Elizabeth Gilbert, TED
This talk by Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love, is so wonderful. We are all creators! The concepts that she shares here has helped me to feel that I am not entirely responsible for what I create. You have got to listen to how she defines the word genius. It is one of my favorite concepts of 2015. It has helped me to be brave. If you have desires to put yourself out there and create in any way, this is an amazing talk!
4- The Power of Introverts, Susan Cain, TED
I am not much of an introvert, but this presentation by Susan Cain helped me to understand the minds and greatness of so many people in my life. Whether you are an introvert or not, I highly recommend watching this goodness.
5- Hands Free Mama, Rachel Macy Stafford
This blog is the best! As a Mama who is always in a hurry, often not present (staring at my screen), and sometimes not nice to my children, this blog speaks to me! I mean, seriously, directly to me! I am grateful for the Rachel’s authenticity. She shares her failures and successes, and I feel so connected with them. Seeing that I am the mom of three, as she she calls “stop-and-smell-the roses” children, this post has stuck in my head. If motherhood is an area that you would like to improve, this is a great place to start.
This year I have two goals for my social media intake. The first is to take in less and spend more time “hands free” with my family. The second is that when I do share, I want to share more good.
We would love to hear and enjoy your favorite shares this past year. Please post your favorites in the comments! We hope that you are enjoying The Mama Birds Blog. It has been such a fun adventure to experience in our family. We hope to add a little goodness in your lives this next year
